We were really pleased that people brought along historical artefacts as well as photographs and documents to our event in October. Especially as a couple of them have proved to be mysteries.
This was found some years ago, by Peter Holland, on an allotment at the back of Mary Street.
There's not much doubt that it's a pop- or beer-bottle. The question is, who and where were "Anderton's Skipton" ?
The second item, brought along by Chris Flegg, is a total mystery.
We're calling it a roofing-pin, but that's only because it fell out of the roof of a house in Kirkgate during some renovations. It's true purpose is not known.
The "pin" is cast iron, about 8" long and about a quarter-of-an-inch wide, tapering to a point at one end and splayed at the other. The splayed end has the characters "H" and "W" (or perhaps "M" and "H"), although the "H" is not as well defined as the "W" (or "M"). But what is this ? What is it for ? How old is it ?
